Boat Insurance in New York

Boat insurance in New York, written for local waters

Boating around New York means busy harbors, strong tidal currents, commercial traffic and a season shaped by the weather. Gordon Companies shops boat insurance across multiple carriers for owners who keep their boats at marinas around the city, on Long Island, in Westchester and along the Hudson.

As an independent, family-owned brokerage in Midtown since 1968, we work for you, not for one insurer. You talk to a real person who will ask where you keep the boat, where you take it and how you use it, because those answers shape the policy.

What boat and watercraft insurance covers

A boat policy is a separate contract from your home or auto coverage, written for the risks of being on the water. Depending on the carrier and the policy, it can include:

  • Physical damage to the hull, motor, permanently attached equipment and, on many policies, the trailer
  • Liability for injuries or property damage you cause to others
  • Medical payments for you and your passengers, and on many policies for water skiers and tubers
  • Uninsured boater coverage, for injuries caused by a boater without enough insurance
  • Fuel spill liability and wreck removal, since owners can be responsible for cleanup and salvage
  • Personal effects and unattached equipment such as fishing gear, life jackets and anchors
  • Towing and on-water assistance if you are disabled away from the dock

Agreed value or actual cash value

An agreed value policy pays the value you and the carrier settle on when the policy is written, less the deductible, if the boat is a total loss. Actual cash value takes depreciation into account, which can leave you short when replacing an older boat. We show you which one each carrier is offering.

Boating in New York area waters

Local boaters use a wide range of water: New York Harbor, the East and Hudson rivers, Long Island Sound, the South Shore bays and the open Atlantic. Every policy defines where you are covered, and that definition deserves a careful read.

Navigation limits

If you plan a run up the Hudson, a cruise to New England or a trip down the coast, check that your navigation area includes it. Many carriers can extend the territory for a planned trip, but it has to be arranged before you leave the dock.

Lay-up periods

Many policies include a lay-up period, the months when the boat is expected to be out of the water or out of use. If you want to launch early or stay out late in the season, the policy may need to be changed first.

Marinas and storage

Marinas and yacht clubs often ask for proof of liability coverage, sometimes with specific limits or with the marina named on a certificate. Some carriers also ask how you will secure the boat when a major storm is forecast. Tell us what your slip agreement requires and we will make sure the policy matches.

How we shop your boat policy

Carriers look at boats and owners in different ways. The main factors we compare are:

  • Type, length, age, value and horsepower of the boat
  • Where it is kept and where it will be navigated
  • Your boating experience and any safety courses you have taken
  • Your claims history
  • The length of the lay-up period
  • The deductibles and liability limits you choose

Gaps we look for

A homeowners policy typically provides little or no coverage for boats beyond very small craft, so relying on it is one of the most common gaps we find.

We also check whether your umbrella policy extends over your boat liability, since some umbrellas limit coverage for larger or faster boats. If you trailer your boat, we make sure your auto policy and boat policy fit together on the road.

Owners of larger yachts often place them alongside a broader high net worth insurance program, so the limits and deductibles work as one plan.

Questions we hear about boat insurance

Is boat insurance required in New York?

New York does not generally require it by law, but marinas, yacht clubs and lenders commonly do. Even when it is optional, liability coverage on the water is worth having.

Does my homeowners insurance cover my boat?

Usually only in a very limited way, if at all. Most boats, and almost any boat with a sizable motor, need a dedicated boat policy.

Can I insure a jet ski or other personal watercraft?

Yes. Personal watercraft can be insured with physical damage, liability and medical payments coverage, often on a policy similar to a boat policy.

Is my boat covered while it is laid up for the winter?

A lay-up period restricts use, not protection. Many policies continue to cover the boat on land for covered losses such as fire or theft, but the terms vary, so we review them with you.
